“ Sorry, this application cannot run under a virtual machine ” – Error Fixed

Recently I was attempting to open an application but kept being prompt with the following error: “Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine.” (As seen in the screenshot below).

No matter What I did; I was unable to get rid of this error. My first thought should have been to “Google it” which I had refused to so until I ran out of Ideas. I went from:

  • Disabling virtualization in BIOS
    to

  • Tampering the registery in Windows

  • Updating BIOS

  • Updating Intel drivers

  • Uninstalling and re-installing the application

Until I came across the following steam forum: https://steamcommunity.com/app/555570/discussions/0/152390648089353221/

The fix suggested in the steam forum works! All credit to the user in the steam forum!

The Fix:

  • Search for Windows Features

  • Disable “Hyper-V
(Once you disable “Hyper-V” and click “OK” it will ask you to restart; after the restart if the application kept prompting you with the same error; leave “Hyper-V” disabled and attempt step 3.)

  • Open File Explorer:

    1. Click on “This PC” and right click and select “Properties

  • Click on “Change Settings”

  • Once “System Properties” has launched click on “Change” and rename your PC. For example, your PC might have name like DESKTOP-123ABC. Change it to something like “Kevin” or any other word/name. Once you’ve done this… Restart your PC and the error should go away.
